SYLVANIAVET WILL BE HOSTING A FREE CAT HEALTH SEMINAR
on Thursday, February 21 at 7:30 PM in the hospitals learning center. Drs. Andrea and Crystal will be hosting this very informative meeting for all cat lovers. Topics to be covered will be health issues, enrichment, the importance of a Cat Friendly Practice and plenty of time for questions and answers. There will be door prizes for all in attendance and a raffle drawing for a gift card. The client education seminars will become a regular feature of SylvaniaVET’s community outreach program. Tell your friends and come as a group. Call 419-885-4421 to sign up.
DR. BOB IS VERY EXCITED
to announce that the business his son Tim founded, Esplin Medical is up and running for the human market with a variety of scrubs colors and designs.. Previously the scrubs were marketed mostly to the veterinary offices. The Denver shipping office is ready to receive orders for this PREMIUM LINE of environmentally friendly surgical scrubs, surgery caps and jackets. Tim sold EM so that he could return to the corporate world. There is no other scrub fabric like the EM line on the market. Made of 55% Bamboo, 25% cotton and 20% polyester from recycled plastic bottles the scrubs are comfortable enough to wear as PJ’s. Many of us remember Nehru jackets and polyester clothes. They are now a punch line of many jokes. Most surgical scrubs on the market today have not come out of the past. These course scrubs are made of a high percentage of polyester which is manufactured from oil. After repeated washings they never get as comfortable as EM scrubs right out of the package. EM scrubs are 80% natural fiber which means they breathe and are cooler. They wash quicker in cooler water, are naturally stain resistant and antimicrobial. To learn more about EM scrubs and to place an order for these truly innovative, unique and environmentally friendly scrubs go to www.esplinmedical.com.
EM will be offering opportunities for individuals to host scrub sale parties for their medical professional friends. If you would be interested in learning more about the scrub party opportunity you may leave a comment for Tim on the website. Just like a Pampered Chef party the scrub party will be fun and profitable for the host/hostess. SylvaniaVET will be a retail outlet for the entire line of EM scrubs and Toledo Family Pharmacy in Cricket West will stock Navy and Carribbean Blue scrubs. If you know anyone interested in being a retail outlet or an office that would like to consider purchasing for the entire staff let Dr. Bob know at email@example.com.
DR BOB’S WEEKLY RADIO SHOW, PETSYLVANIA
airs three times weekly, Saturday Noon, Monday 4 PM and Thursday 7 PM on www.wsylradio.com. We encourage you to listen and send questions to be answered on air to either firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com The show has three sponsors, Elanco makers of Trifexis and Comfortis, SylvaniaVET and Esplin Medical.
SINCE HURRIACNE DEVASTED THE EAST COAST WE HAVE BEEN ASKED ABOUT PETS AND ANIMAL CARE FACILITIES IN THE WAKE OF THE STORM.
Like everything in the path of this killer storm, veterinary practices, shelters, farms and pets were affected. For those of you interested in learning more we have an article from the AVMA journal about the how Sandy affected animal related issues. Just ask for Sandy.
RABIES IS A SERIOUS PUBLIC HEALTH DISEASE
that we are fortunate to have limited exposure to in Lucas County. The major carrier of rabies in our area is bats. Animals can be exposed to bats both outside and in your home. It is for this reason that all public health organizations form local, state, and federal encourage all veterinarians to vaccinate all dogs, cats and ferrets. Most rabies is transmitted by the bite of a rabid animal as it approaches death. On the other hand bats are capable to transmitting rabies through a bite and by exposure to air transmitted virus. This is worth knowing if you should happen to have a bat haven in your attic or if you like to explore caves. The Bat Cave can be a serious health hazard to spelunkers. No dog or cat has been reported to have rabies in Lucas County since the county health department began keeping records in 1955. This is good news but should not be an excuse for not vaccinating your house pets.

BEHAVIORIAL PROBLEMS ARE THE MOST COMMON REASON DOGS ARE RELINQUISHED TO SHELTERS OR EUTHANIZED.
The sad news is that many of the reasons that behavioral issues lead to such drastic solutions is because adequate time and attention was not given to the animals during the critical period of growth and development. Punishment is not the way to teach a dog the right way. You must reward the good behavior and distract or prevent inappropriate behavior. Our first puppy visit is devoted to the discussion of teaching manners among other important husbandry issues. Our Pawsative puppy development and basic obedience are extremely important to the dog learning how to be a good family member. Should problems develop it is critical that you schedule an appointment with a SylvaniaVET doctor to discuss the problem and develop a remediation plan. Should that not be enough Dr. Bob will get involved as he has a strong interest in behavior medicine. It is not recommended that you look for answers by asking a trainer as they are not behavioralists. The final step is to see a veterinary behavior specialist. There is not a trained specialist in our area but we recommend Dr. Feltes who is located near Akron (www.thebehaviorclinic.com). We encourage you to be proactive and get on a problem before it becomes serious. If it is not going to be ok when the dog is an adult, it is not ok as a puppy.
FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL VETERINARY DENTAL HEALTH MONTH.
For SylvaniaVET every month is pet dental health month. Every time we see your pet we “flip the lip” to look at the pet’s teeth and gums. This includes when your pet boards with us and receives its free tech exam. For us helping your pet has a healthy mouth and by extension a healthier life is a very high priority. We want to talk with you about how to help your pet’s mouth remain healthy so we don’t wait to discuss this critical pet health issue. The more we can get you to do at home the less often we have to recommend a professional dental health cleaning. However, when we make the recommendation that your dog, cat or small caged pet needs professional care we do so early so as to limit the damage progressive dental infections can cause. We encourage everyone to brush their pet’s teeth once daily using a good quality pet designed tooth paste. Never use human paste to brush your pet’s teeth. Don’t hesitate to ask the next time you are in for tips on how to effectively brush your pet’s teeth.
DR BOB, DR MELANIE AND OUR OTHER DOCTORS ARE VERY INTERESTED IN CANINE REPRODUCTION.
Our Immulite blood chemistry machine enables us to provide same day progesterone blood levels to dog breeders. This information is critical to the proper timing of breeding dates or when to schedule an elective c-section. Our expertise enables us to advise and assist breeders in artificial inseminations as well as all the latest medical and nutritional knowledge to maintain a nine week pregnancy. The only aspect of breeding that we do not currently do is the collection and freezing of semen from a valuable stud dog. It is our intention to add this service in 2013. Recently, Dr. Melanie and one of our breeder clients became aware of a growing problem with pure bred English Bull dog puppies. A condition of newborns called anasarca is occurring in a growing number of new born puppies. Anasarca caused still births and death of puppies soon after birth. The AKC has designated this problem a high priority to find the hereditary cause and develop a genetic marker so that it can be bred out of the breed. Dr. Melanie has started the process of writing an AKC grant so that a study can be funded at MSU’s vet school. We are excited to be a part of this important research.
SPEAKING OF THE AKC THEY RECENTLY GAVE $1.7 MILLION FOR CANINE RESEARCH
The research will benefit all dogs so purebred owners as well as rescue organizations should be pleased as all dogs will benefit. The generous donations will be spread through 17 aspects of canine health research. A few of the studies funded will research cardiac disease in Boxers, crucial ligament healing by the use of plasma materials, several canine cancer studies , and ways to prevent transmission of tick born diseases. There are not many ways for animal only research to be funded so for the AKC to step up in such a generous fashion is terrific. Many owners of new pure bred puppies ask if they should register the dog with the AKC. Even if they are never going to breed their pet this is one great reason to send in the registration fee
AAHA RECENTLY ISSUED A POSITION STATEMENT THAT ACKOWLEDGES THAT PETS HAVE FEELINGS.
Because of legal concerns that acknowledges that pets are sentient beings it took five years of study and consultation for the AAHA to state what all pet owners know to be true. The concern was if AAHA made this statement that lawyers might use this position to claim emotional damage over the loss of a pet. Multiple legal opinions lead to the conclusion that the statement would not increase pet loss liability. What the statement of being a sentient being means is; “they (pets) have the ability to feel, perceive, or be conscious, or have subjective experiences” as stated by the AAHA.
DR BOB WAS AN EARLY PROPONENT OF THE GENTLE LEADER COLLAR
as a great training device for dogs. He first learned about it at the introductory meeting conducted by the products developer Dr. RK Anderson at an AAHA meeting over 20 years ago. The purpose of this tid bit is to inform you that the behavior pioneer Dr. Anderson passed away recently. The development of the gentle leader gave owners of strong aggressive dogs a painless tool so that they could control dogs on walks. After Gentle leader’s introduction professional trainers and behaviorists all over the world found other useful ways to use the benefits of the gentle leader. If walking your dog is a drag, we encourage you to schedule a gentle leader consult visit. You will be instructed on the proper use of the collar and it will be fitted to your dog. If properly instructed owner find the gentle leader a great way to be able to go out of the house with their dogs. Clients that have said they tried the collar and it failed usually did not have proper instruction nor did they understand the concept behind the use of the collar. Many dogs don’t like the collar as it tells them they are no longer in charge. However, if we could ask them if they would rather be choked or prong collared we are pretty sure they would chose the Gentle Leader.
10 YEARS AGO PRODUCT WAS MARKED TO STERLIZE DOGS BY INJECTING THEIR TESTICLES WITH A COMPOUND.
As memory serves there were complications associated with its use which included pain during and after the injections. Also, there was still the production of male hormone which then leads to intact male behaviors. The product has returned but with a new name, Zeuterin. We do not know as of yet if the newly released product is substantially different or just has a new name. We will not jump on this band wagon any time soon. We are in the process of researching if Zeuterin as a viable alternative to surgical neutering.
WE HAVE ADDED A NEW PRODUCT THAT CLAIMS TO LESSEN OR ELIMINATE THE TEAR STAINING THAT AFFECT WHITE DOGS.
The claims seem encouraging for Tear Stain Soft Chews or Tear Stain Remover with little to no down side so we have elected to try the product. If you are the owner of a white dog with tear staining give it a try. We ask that you report to us what your impressions of Tear Stain Soft Chews or Tear Stain Remover are after using for at least three months.
CANINE INFLUENZA VIRUS
is still a major worry for the veterinary profession and should be for dog owners. We have been fortunate that CIV has not penetrated into NW Oho. That does not mean we should let down our guard. Should a CIV rear its ugly head in our region it will be too late to vaccinate and prevent a wide spread epidemic. That is why we encourage all dog owners to have their dog vaccinated with CIV vaccine. Unlike human flu there is not a canine flu season, it can occur any time of the year. The CIV disease in reparatory which means that it easily spreads through the air. Greater that 5% deaths are reported in affected dogs. Permanent lung damage occurs in many that survive. We encourage you to call now to schedule CIV vaccination for your pet. Soon we plan to make it part of our core vaccine protocol.
TRIFEXIS IS OUR NUMBER ONE RECOMMENDED PRODUCT FOR HEARTWORM AND FLEA CONTROL.
THE EASE OF ADMINISTRATION AND THE HIGH DEGREE OF EFFICACY HAS CAUSED US TO REPLACE FRONTLINE THE PRODUCT OF CHOICE FOR DOGS. TRIFEXIS WILL EFFECTIVELY PREVENT HEARTWORM DISEASE, EFFECTIVELY RAPIDLY KILL FLEAS THAT SHOULD INFEST YOUR DOG AND PROVIDES EXCELLENT PREVENTION AGAINST INTERNAL PARASITES INCLUDING WHIPWORM. TRIFEXIS IS THE NEXT GENERATION OF HEARTWORM AND FLEA CONTROL AT A PRICE LESS EXPENSIVE THAT THE COMBINATION OF HEARTGARD PLUS AND FRONTLINE PLUS. HAVE YOU EVER FOUND A TICK ON YOUR DOG? IF THE ANSWER IS YES WE HAVE A BETTER SOLUTION FOR TICK CONTROL THAN ANY OF THE TOPICAL PRODUCTS. ASK US ABOUT SCALIBOR. WE WILL STILL STOCK AND SELL HEARTGARD AND FRONTLINE BUT WILL WANT YOU TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER TRIFEXIS. IT IS LESS EXPENSIVE AND WE HAVE THE BEST PRICES IN THE AREA FOR TRIFEXIS.
