IT IS OFFICIAL: SYLVANIAVET IS THE BEST VET IN NW OHIO.

Readers of the Toledo City Paper have again voted us the best vet for the sixth consecutive year. This is a great honor and we greatly appreciate all of our loyal clients that voted for us in this year’s poll. We take being the best seriously and promise we will work daily to show that the poll is correct. In addition to this great and much appreciated win, our Doggie Day Care was voted second best. Help Save Lola was voted second best facebook page. Again, thanks to all for enabling us to have a six-pack of best vet wins. The best vet is always working to get better.

MARCH ADOPTATHON IS SET FOR MARCH 10th FROM 12-3 PM IN THE SYLVANIAVET LEARNING CENTER.

If you are looking for a new pet for your family this is a great opportunity to meet puppies, kittens, dogs and cats in need of a caring forever home. Many area rescues will bring pets in to allow you to meet the perfect pet for you and your family.

EM will be offering opportunities for individuals to host scrub sale parties for their medical professional friends. If you would be interested in learning more about the scrub party opportunity you may leave a comment for Tim on the website. Just like a Pampered Chef party the scrub party will be fun and profitable for the host/hostess. SylvaniaVET will be a retail outlet for the entire line of EM scrubs and Toledo Family Pharmacy in Cricket West will stock Navy and Carribbean Blue scrubs. If you know anyone interested in being a retail outlet or an office that would like to consider purchasing for the entire staff let Dr. Bob know at drbob@sylvaniavet.com.

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TO DRS. ANDREA AND CRYSTAL

for the great cat friendly seminar they conducted last month. The turnout was terrific and the material presented was much appreciated. We intend to continue holding these free educational seminars every other month. The exact date for the April event is not yet set but the topic will relate to pet food. To be included will be discussions about how to read a dog food label, what criterion should you consider when choosing a pet food and an introduction to a revolutionary new diet food by Hills Prescription Diet. There will be door prizes for all and a raffle for a gift card.

OUR FIRST COMMUNITY EVENT OF 2013

will be the Sylvania Business Expo at Tam-O-Shanter Saturday, March 23rd from 9am-3pm. This free event is a great time to meet area businesses. We always have a great time and have lots of free gifts and information for those in attendance. Put an hour on your calendar to attend the business expo.

“WE ARE YOUR PET’S HEALTH CARE ADVOCATE” IS THE OPENING LINE OF OUR MISSION STATEMENT.

When Dr. Bob, his associates and members of the staff were talking about why he started SylvaniaVET recently he cited this simple statement as expressing his philosophy. He and Carol came home to Sylvania in 1974 to bring a different style of pet care to the community. He chose to sacrifice free time, family time and personal time to be there for his patients and by extension his clients 24/7/365. This commitment took the full buy in of Carol as she handled most the responsibilities on the home front. It is this commitment to being a pet’s full time doctor that each associate has agreed to when they came to work at SylvaniaVET. We are so proud that we have such a dedicated, professional staff that buy into the importance of being every pet’s health care advocate.

SYLVANIAVET IS FRONT AND CENTER IN PROMOTING THE PRACTICE IN ALL FOUR MEDIA TYPES.

We have a presence on facebook with our SylvaniaVET page, Help Save Lola page and Dr. Bob’s page, Robert Esplin. We keep our name in the print media with ads in Buzz Magazine, Sylvania Advantage and Toledo City Paper. We have begun advertising on K100 with several ads that are aired each week. Of course, Dr. Bob airs Petsylvania on www.wsylradio.com every Saturday. We cover the TV market as one of TV 13’s Get Connected selected area businesses. We have also advertised on the Westminster Dog Show broadcasts. With all this exposure you are still our best advertisement. We encourage you to zealously promote SylvaniaVET to all your animal owning friends, family and co-workers. A bunch of raving fans is our best way to acquire new clients. Tell everyone about our great pet care destination, SylvaniaVET.

WE HAVE JUST COMPLETED A NEW BROCHURE

explaining our charitable foundation, Memories Live on Animal Foundation. At the northeast corner of the parking lot is our memorial garden. It is here that we place memorial bricks purchased in honor of their beloved pet. The money raised by the sale of memorial bricks, generous donations and fund raising events is used to fund five charity categories. The foundation gives a scholarship to an OSU Vet Student. In addition, we support local rescue groups, we provide Good Samaritan donations, and we promote the human-animal bond. We also fund an endowment to keep the Foundation going. Please feel free to ask for our new brochure and when the weather is nicer pay a visit to the memorial garden and its beautiful sculpture, Embracing Memories.

WE EXPECT HILLS NEW WEIGHT LOSS DIET, METABOLIC DIET, TO CHANGE HOW OVER WEIGHT PETS ARE DIETED.

Using recently learned knowledge about fat and how it influences a body’s metabolism, Metabolic diet is a game changer. Both human and pet nutritional scientists are learning that excessive body fat does not just sit there benignly. Rather, research has shown that fat actually secretes self preservation hormones that shut off the fat burning genes in people and pets. The scientists at Hill’s have learned how to turn those genes back on. We will be talking to owners of overweight pets, dogs and cats, about using Metabolic Diet to help the animal lose weight. We are so excited to have this new technology at our finger tips before the human side has figured out to use the gene altering knowledge. The good news about the technology is that it involves only all natural ingredients and uses no pharmaceuticals with potential side effects. Like we said, Metabolic Diet is a game changer.

WE ARE ALL BECOMING MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS.

SylvaniaVET is doing its part. We recycle all our cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, syringe cases, caps, aluminum cans and paper. We are looking at technology that will enable us to e-mail you receipts rather than use paper and toner to print a receipt. Most of us are also wearing Esplin Medical scrubs and jackets. These premium scrubs are made from 80% renewable resources, 55% Bamboo 25% Cotton and only 20% polyester from recycled plastic bottles. Most other scrubs are 65% Poly and 35% cotton. Poly is of course a synthetic fabric that comes from oil. Other environmentally friendly aspects of EM scrubs is they wash with less and cooler water, dry more quickly at a lower temperature. Bamboo is naturally antimicrobial. On the comfort side they are like wearing PJ’s. You can learn more about EM scrubs and place an order at www.esplinmedical.com. Toledo Family Pharmacy carries two colors of EM scrubs at their two locations. Soon SylvaniaVET will have a display of all four colors and styles of EM Scrubs.

THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE DOES NOT ALLOW UNLICENSED INDIVIDUALS TO HAVE OR RAISE RACCOONS.

We support this policy as there are immediate and long term worries about keeping raccoons in your home. It is our understanding that even Natures Nursery, licensed wildlife rehab facility and Michigan State’s vet school will not care for raccoons of any age for any reason. The first concern about raccoons is the potential of rabies transmission. Raccoon rabies is a serious problem in some states and currently exists in Mahoning County in eastern Ohio. Secondly, raccoons carry a strain of roundworms that can be extremely harmful to both humans and pets. Should you get raccoons in your home it is critical that you have the clean up done by a professional. We have a handout on raccoon roundworms, ask for Raccoon.

DID YOU KNOW THAT IF YOUR PET IS HOSPITALIZED AT SYLVANIAVET YOU CAN VISIT ANYTIME?

With our 24/7 staffing and open door policy, we have nothing to hide, you are welcome to call and let us know you are coming to visit your pet. Though we don’t encourage it, we have had clients spend the entire night with their sick pet. Of a more practical nature, the fact that we always answer our own phones means you can check on your pet anytime. We get lots of calls just before bed time. If you know of any practice, anywhere in the US that allows this total access we would like to meet them.

DIGITAL DENTAL X-RAYS ARE PROVING TO BE AS IMPORTANT

to our ability to provide great professional dental care as our seven parameter monitors are to making anesthesia as safe as possible. The rad’s have enabled us to save teeth that might otherwise have been pulled, as well as finding hidden pathology that would have been missed. Because cats have many hidden defects below the gum line, it is now the standard of SylvaniaVET dental care to take full mouth x-rays on each cat dental.

CATS DEVELOP AN IMMUNE SYSTEM CONDITION CALL EOSINOPHILIC GRANULOMA COMPLEX, EGC.

The cause of the abnormal immune system reaction is not known. It is felt that food allergies may play a role. EGC can be found anywhere on the body in a variety of forms. Most commonly red, dry crusty lesions are seen on the skin. Some cats develop a fat lip condition called rodent ulcer. When we suspect EGC we will recommend a skin biopsy to verify our concerns as treatment can be prolonged. Right now EGC is treated with either high doses of cortisone or Atopica (cyclosporine) and quite likely a switch to a hypoallergenic diet. Once EGC is cleared the medications can be stopped. Reoccurrence is not uncommon.

OUR GROOMERS, NANCY AND KATIE ARE IN DEMAND.

They do a wonderful job and can meet your grooming needs. All you need to do is ask if you have a special request. Many clients don’t want the pet with us all day. That’s as easy as asking for a call and early pickup when the grooming is done. On the other hand, if you work a long shift and cannot pick up until late that is ok. The staff will see they get outside and don’t soil their beautiful grooming. Grooming is open Monday through Saturday by appointment. Because of high demand you will need to call 419-885-4421 well in advance so you can get your pet groomed when you want. We are looking for a part time groomer to help ease the load.

CLIENT EDUCATION SEMINAR

Will be held on April 17, 2013 at 7:30 PM in our Daycare/Training area. Dr. Jen Tate will talk about Disaster Preparedness as we head into spring and Tornado season. Dr. Tate is the head of the NW Ohio/Regional Disaster Animal Response Team (DART). DART is a team of volunteers ready to help rescue, house, and treat animals during disasters and other emergencies.

Join us for light grazing, door prizes and helpful information on how to keep your pets safe during inclement weather!

The Hills Metabolic Diet and Healthy Pet Weight Seminar scheduled with Dr. Bob will be held in June when he returns from his medical leave!
