in the SylvaniaVET learning center from 12-3 PM. Several area rescues will have dogs, cats, puppies and kittens looking for forever homes. If you are looking for a pet this is a great time to adopt before the craziness of the holiday season. If you are just looking of course you are welcome to attend as well. Free soft serve ice cream will be served and there will also be a drawing for a door prize.

SANTA-PET HOLIDAY PICTURES ARE SCHEDULED FOR SUNDAY, NOVERMBER 24th FROM NOON TO 4 PM.

We have held this holiday tradition for over 20 years. This year the Memories Live on Animal Foundation will sponsor the event. All proceeds after expenses will be deposited in the account of our charitable foundation. The fee for each sitting is $20.00 which includes a 5×7 and 4 wallets of studio quality pictures. Holiday cards and other photo novelties will also be available for purchase. Treats for pets and people will be served. We hope to have over 100 sittings to help us raise funds for our foundation. Stop in or call 419-885-4421 to sign up for a sitting time.

ANNUAL BEST OF VOTING FOR TOLEDO CITY PAPER BEGINS WITH THE TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4th ISSUE.

We have been selected BEST VET for six consecutive years and want to make it seven (7). This can only happen if you take a few minutes to go to Toledocitypaper.com and fill out the application. There will be published ballots as well but the on-line voting is very easy. Only one vote per person please but everyone in the family can vote. You may vote for the same business in a maximum of three categories and must vote in at least 30 categories. Please look for other areas that you might vote for SylvaniaVET.

WE ARE TAKING THIS OPPORTUNITY TO ANNOUNCE THAT DR MELANIE BLAISDELL HAS LEFT SYLVANIAVET.

We are sorry that we could not give you more of a heads up on her leaving but she only gave us one week’s notice she was departing. She was given an opportunity to fulfill a dream she has had since undergraduate school, pursuing her dream in veterinary research. We are aggressively looking for a replacement doctor to fill Dr. Mel’s position but in the mean time Dr. Bob will be taking over her schedule and be participating in on-call and weekend responsibilities. Her departure came as a surprise to us but we wish her well. She will not be able to provide care to any of our established clients while she is not a member of our staff. Having two young children and a hard working ambitious husband was putting great pressure on her obligations to SylvaniaVET. Her new job will require no on-call, no weekends and provide more time for her kids and husband. Good luck Dr. Mel. All exotic pets will be referred to Dr. Tim Rickhard on Monroe St. until a new doctor is hired. For those of you wondering this was a decision made totally by Dr Mel who had a new contract waiting for her to sign but she elected to follow another path. We wish her all the best with her future ventures.

SINCE 2007 THERE HAVE BEEN ILLNESSES IN DOGS ASSOCIATED WITH CHICKEN AND OTHER POULTRY TREATS MANUFACTURED IN CHINA.

Severe intestinal illnesses as well as over 500 deaths have been attributed to the Chinese manufactured treats. The exact cause is not known. The FDA which is responsible for approval of all these products is actively looking for the cause of the poultry treats illnesses and deaths. In the mean time do not buy any food products for your dog or cat that are made in China.

DR BOB IS STILL DOING AN ON-LINE RADIO SHOW EVERY SATURDAY ON WWW.WSYLRADIO.COM.

you cannot tune in at noon on Saturday, his show Petsylvania is rebroadcast at 4 PM Monday and 7 PM Thursday. He encourages you to send questions for him to answer on air to request@wsylradio.com. Another way to contact Dr. Bob is on facebook at Robert Esplin. He encourages you to request friendship and then ask questions which he will answer in a timely manner. This is better than the Ask the Vet the Blade publishes as it is only printed every other week and the doctor will not answer any question not published. Right now Dr. Bob is doing a regular face book series on pet foods that can be read on his time line.

SEVERAL NEW HILLS TREATS AS WELL AS CHEWABLE DASAQUIN HAVE BEEN ADDED TO OUR INVENTORY.

In addition we have found a source for generic Rimadyl, Carpofen that meets all the standards of efficacy and bioavailability as the brand name. We will begin stocking this new product soon. For now the Carpofen product is non-chewable tablets but we are told a chewable version is coming soon. The new product is manufactured in the USA. We know it sounds self serving but we encourage you to buy dog treats, heartworm and flea products from us. Our secret shopping shows we have the best prices on most of the products you most frequently buy.

FOR MANY YEARS WE HAVE VACCINATED WITH INTRANASAL BORDETELLA-PARAINFLUENZA VACCINE.

We felt that it was important to try to prevent the most common respiratory infection we see. We feel strongly that twice yearly bordetella vaccine is important to maintain high quality immunity. We are about to change how we provide the bordetella immunity but here are a few facts before we announce that change. Bordetella and parainfluenza are not the only causes of the respiratory disease known as Canine Cough but they are the most common. Bordetella immunity does not last a year. Parainfluenza lasts a year but not longer. Starting very soon we will begin to incorporate injectible bordetella vaccine in our vaccine protocol. At annual wellness visits your dog will receive the intranasal form of the vaccine. At the six months visit it will receive an injectible. This may need to be boostered the first time we give it. All the details of this new protocol are being worked out by our medical staff.

NOT ALL OMEGA 3 FATTY ACID SUPPLEMENTS ARE CREATED EQUAL.

One point you need to look for in a product is pure cold water fish oil. Some of the less expensive products are mixed with vegetable oil which lessens the strength of the product. Your dog or cat should consume about 110 mg of Omega 3’s per 10 lbs body weight every day. The product we recommend is Welactin liquid which is very concentrated.

WE WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND THE SYMPATHY OF THE SYLVANIAVET STAFF TO THE FAMILIES OF DR. BOB ELROD AND DR BOB WOODGEARD OF BRYAN.

Both these terrific veterinarians passed away recently after enjoying many years of retirement.

PUPPY DEVELOPMENT AND BASIC OBEDIENCE CLASSES ARE FORMING.

The next set of Pawsative classes taught by Doug will begin Tuesday, November 12th at 6:30pm. . On Saturday classes will be held at 4pm starting December 7th. Stop in or call to sign up.

OCCASIONALLY WE HAVE SEEN A SPAYED CAT COME INTO HEAT.

This was most commonly associated with what is called retained ovary syndrome. The exact cause can be the result of a surgical error when all or part of an ovary is left in the pet following routine spay. This syndrome seemed to increase with low cost clinics doing surgery through very small incisions. We have also seen one case where there was actually an additional ovary located near the stomach that secreted enough hormone to trigger the signs of heat. More recently the syndrome has become associated with topical hormone replacement therapy creams that women apply to their skin. The cat or dog licks the application site and ingests enough estrogen to trigger heat. Problems are also associated with male hormone (testosterone) creams used by men. If you are prescribed these products be sure to apply them in a place your pet cannot lick.

IT IS RECOMMENDED BY ALL PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS THAT ALL DOGS, CATS AND FERRETS RECEIVE RABIES VACCINE.

The vaccine is only required by law in dogs but common sense says that the other species should also be protected. There is activity in the State legislature to require that cats and ferrets also be required by law to have up to date rabies protection.

HERE IS A CHALLENGE FOR THOSE OF YOU WITH SOME SPARE TIME. FIND A PRACTICE WITHIN A 5 MILE RADIUS OF SYLVANIAVET THAT CHARGES LESS FOR HEARTGARD PLUS, FRONTLINE PLUS AND TRIFEXIS.

The cost must be less for all sizes of each product not just one size in each product group. We are confident that you will not find a lower priced practice. You must compare regular prices not short term discounted prices or any of the rebates or free doses. The products must be the veterinary brand name. If you find such a practice the first person to submit the lower prices for the given product and practice will receive a $50 credit to their account. Anyone that submits their lists for all products from any practice will receive a small gift from us.

STARTING IN DECEMBER WE WILL DISPLAY A DONATION JAR FOR AN AREA RESCUE.

Each month we will rotate the rescue so that all those that use us for their care will benefit. All donations collected will be applied to the rescues account.

WITH THE HOLIDAYS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNOR WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO KEEP AN EYE OPEN FOR WAYS TO HELP ANIMALS IN NEED

We will again be working with Sylvania Family Services to provide routine care to pets from families less fortunate. We expect to have a giving tree that you can select a gift to pass onto an area rescue. We may have another fund raising game for the Memories Live on Animal Foundation.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO OWN SYLVANIAVET CLOTHES? WE WILL BE PLACING AN ORDER FOR TEES, HOODIES, SWEAT PANTS AND JACKETS NOVEMBER 15th.

Let any staff member know and we will add your name to the list of great clothing items we will be purchasing. In addition, if you purchase a set of ESPLIN MEDICAL bamboo-cotton scrubs from stock, you will get a 10% discount and a donation in your name will be made to the Foundation. The top shelf of the canine product store contains a sample of the scrubs. These are the scrubs worn by the SylvaniaVET staff. You can wear them as PJ’s or give them as gifts to medical professionals. They will love you for introducing them to the EM scrubs and jackets.

BEWARE OF BOXWOOD HEDGES OR BUSHES.

Boxwood leaves and stems are very toxic to dogs. The signs of toxicity are facial swelling and possible respiratory distress followed by severe GI signs. Recently a dog ingested some boxwood leaves and became very ill. The family had only lived in this new home for a month and did not know about the boxwood hedge or its potential toxicity. After 3 days of aggressive hospital treatment, we were able to send the patient home. Needless to say the client’s home needs a new less toxic hedge as it had a close encounter with a chain saw.

BE CAREFUL DISPOSING OF STRINGS USED TO TRUSS THE THANKSGIVING TURKEY AND THE CARCASS.

Over the years we have had to do surgery on dogs and cats that ate the juicy turkey string which then lead to an intestinal obstruction. Too many turkey bones can cause lots of GI upset and trouble. Get it into a sealed garbage can as soon as possible.

HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING

DR. CRYSTAL WILL BE ON CALL AND MEMBERS OF OUR DEDICATED STAFF WILL BE HERE ROUND THE CLOCK ON THANKSGIVING. BE SURE TO CALL US IF YOU NEED US.
