AVA WEGRZYN IS THE 21 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER OF ONE OF OUR TECHS, JENNY AND HER HUSBAND KEN.

The family received information that is dreaded by every parent, their daughter Ava has cancer involving her liver. Her diagnosis is Hepatoblastoma and is being treated by a team of surgeons and oncologists at Cincinnati’s Childrens Hospital. There are many expenses that even the best health insurance cannot or will not cover. To this end, SylvaniaVET has started a fund raising program to help relieve the financial concerns of Ava’s treatment so Jen and Ken can concentrate on Ava’s treatment and helping her get well. Ava is expected to recover from her bout with cancer. AVA’S ANGELS is the avenue that our head tech, Laura Ganzel has started to raise funds to assist with Ava’s recovery. Currently we are selling pink wrist bands with the inscription “Ava’s Angels. Hope, Love, Cure” for a donation of at least $5.00. Ava’s Angels has a Facebook page that you can like and follow as additional fund raising activities are started. Ava’s treatment will take time and the financial needs will not end soon. It was with great reluctance that Jenny and Ken approved our desire to help by raising money to help defray uninsured expenses. PLEASE HELP US HELP AVA BY BUYING WRIST BANDS AND FOLLOWING THE PROGRESS OF ONE OF SYLVANIAVET’S FAMILY MEMBERS.

THE PUBLISHERS OF TOLEDO CITY PAPER AND TOLEDO PARENT NEWS HAVE AN ANNUAL BEST OF POLL.

As most of you know SylvaniaVET has been honored by being voted Best VET by readers of the City Paper for seven consecutive years. We greatly appreciate your votes which inspire us to do even better the next year. What many of you might not know is that we have been selected as Toledo Parent’s Family Favorite Best Vet for the last two years. We have never promoted this poll and have still won. What a great endorsement of your loyalty and our care. The publisher of these local publications has asked us to promote the Family Favorite poll so that more of you might become familiar with this informative family centric publication. The Family Favorite poll is active now and voting can be accessed at www.toledoparent.com. Of course we would appreciate your voting for SylvaniaVET as best vet but also in the category for volunteering. Our Cat Cuddler and Pet Pal volunteer programs are a great way for kids to spend time with animals. Voting ends on April 15th.

FLAT STANLEY IS A CHILDRENS BOOK CHARACTER THAT HAS BEEN A MUCH ENJOYED SERIES OF ADVENTURES FOR 50 YEARS.

Flat Stanley has had many adventures throughout the world over his lifetime and we thought we would use the Flat Stanley concept and have some fun with FLAT DR BOB. Starting March 3rd you may pick up a Flat Dr Bob likeness on a stick and take him on your adventures. You will be able to post pictures on our SylvaniaVET facebook page in three categories. You must like our page to be able to post:
A. MOST ADVENTOUROUS
B. BEST LANDMARK
C. SILLIEST
D. PHOTOS BY STAFF
Post your pictures on the SylvaniaVET face book page. Before voting begins in late May, we will place each picture in its correct category. You may enter as many pictures as you wish in as many categories as you desire. You can only win one prize. The rules for posting and voting will be on the SylvaniaVET face book page (remember you must like us to enter ) and only one vote per person in each category so there will be no ballot stuffing. The first FLAT DR BOB contest will end May 30th. Your votes will count for half the winners as a team of staff members will also vote. Voting will start May 31st and will end June 14th. Winners will be announced in the July FYI.
Three prizes will be awarded in each category. Prizes are as follows: first; $50 gift certificate to SylvaniaVET, second; certificate for three free nail trims and third; a Barry’s card. Take Flat Dr. Bob on spring break with you, to the store, to the zoo, well you get the idea.

TRIFEXIS IS THE HEARTWORM, FLEA CONTROL AND INTERNAL PARASITE CONTROL PRODUCT THAT WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND.

We think that this once a month pill makes protecting your dog year round against these groups of parasites the easiest and most effective choice. The only parasite not on the list is ticks and if you have had a tick problem or will be going where ticks are a concern, there are ways to provide protection. For the short tick season you can use both Trifexis and Frontline. There are also two very effective tick collars, Scalibor is our choice as it lasts for six months while it repels and kills ticks, provides mild flea control and repels mosquitoes. Preventic Collar also works but uses a fairly strong dose of an insecticide that is potentially toxic to humans. The Preventic collar lasts for three months. The manufacturer of Frontline Plus, Merial, has developed a new and highly desirable product, called Nexgard. The chewable pill is given once monthly and protects against fleas and ticks, the same as Frontline. We think Nexgard will ultimately replace Frontline Plus and will prove to be more effective than its predecessor. We still recommend the combination of Heartgard Plus and Frontline Plus for clients not wishing to switch. It is important to know that most veterinary medical authorities recommend heartworm and flea control for your dogs and cats year round. There are many other products on the market and sold by veterinarians and in stores that claim to do the same thing as the products we recommend. We have studied and reviewed all the products and have selected Trifexis, Heartgard, Frontline or Nexgard as our primary recommended products. We will also carry a limited amount of other products, Sentinel, Revolution to meets special needs. Be sure to talk to us if you are uncertain which product to buy, if you have to worry about ticks or would like to know more about heartworm, fleas, internal parasites and ticks. Trifexis is a very safe product but may not be recommended if your dog has a history of seizures. Finally, you may hear about a six month shot for heartworm. We do not recommend this injection and feel it should not be used. It was pulled off the market a few years ago but now Proheart is back. Best advice, stay away.
Revolution is our number one recommended product for all cats to protect them against heartworm and fleas. Even cats that never go outside should receive monthly Revolution year round.
Many of you will receive letters and/or coupons from the makers of Trifexis and Heartgard. We signed up for these mailings as we want you to have all available benefits regardless of what product you choose. Right now the best deal is a $50 rebate on Trifexis if you purchase 12. Until the special coupons run out this rebate replaces the standard $25 rebate offered both last year and this year. Coupons for discounts on Heartgard and free doses of Frontline will also be arriving. We will also offer rebates when purchasing Heartgard (12) with either Frontline or Nexgard (6). That gives you great flexibility. Remember do not ever buy these products from anyone but SylvaniaVET. We have the best prices, best advice and the rebates that others do not or cannot provide.
This is a summary of your options when buying monthly medications for your dog to provide protection against fleas, heartworm, internal parasites and ticks.
Heartworm, fleas and internal parasites (no concern with ticks). Trifexis is number one, then Heartgard and topical Frontline or oral Nextgard. We think the Trifexis will be the most cost effective if ticks are not a worry. Trifexis is less expensive than the combination of Heartgard and Frontline Plus without considering rebates
Heartworm, fleas, internal parasites and ticks. You have options, such as Trifexis and a Scalibor collar. The Trifexis does a better and more complete job preventing internal parasites. You only need tick protection for a few months in the spring and summer. With Heartgard and Frontline or Nextgard, the internal parasite control is not as complete but still adequate. We have had clients express worry over the effectiveness of Frontline. We know it can be difficult to apply to get best results. Nextgard will prove to be better than the topical Frontline, but will be more costly. Flea and heartworm control is recommended year round, tick protection is not.
Heartworm and internal parasite control only (no flea or tick control) Heartgard plus or Sentinel meet these needs the best. This is the minimum monthly, year round protection that we recommend. All dogs need this protection. We never recommend generic heartworm or flea control products.

ONE CANNOT OVER EMPHASISE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE YEARLY WELLNESS EXAM BY ONE OF OUR DOCTORS FOR ALL YOUR PETS.

Some clients elect to not vaccinate their pets ever or stop at some time during adulthood. As dogs and cats advance in years and begin to show problems both physical and mental, we will often recommend stopping routine vaccination. This is a decision that is best made in consultation with the doctor at the annual wellness visit. We do not recommend that you make this decision on your own based on information from less than professional sources. We do allow clients to sign a waiver for vaccinations if they feel strongly about not giving vaccines, but we will not allow you to sign off on the annual wellness exam. The exam is necessary to maintain a client-patient-doctor relationship which is essential to our ability to provide your pet excellent medical care. As we only provide emergency care to clients who have an up to date wellness exam and c-p-d relationship, it is very important we see all your pets yearly. We discourage you from arbitrarily opting out of vaccines as the risk of exposure to diseases occurs whether your pet leaves the house or yard or not . A year in the life of a dog or cat is equal to at least four human years. We will counsel you as to when and how often each vaccine should be given so that you have the whole story. Adult pets over the age of 7-9 years should have, at a minimum, a complete blood count, full chemistry panel and a urinalysis every year. Other testing will be recommended based on the initial results and other factors determined at the annual wellness exam.

SYLVANIAVET’S TRIANNUAL AAHA INSPECTION IS THIS MONTH.

We are proud that we have been inspected and certified by AAHA since 1978. We have said it before, but it is always worth repeating, IF A VETERINARY PRACTICE IS NOT A FULL AAHA HOSPITAL MEMBER, THE PRACTICE IS NEVER INSPECTED FOR STANDARDS OF CARE, CLEANLINESS, RECORD KEEPING AND MANY OTHER IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF PET CARE. We do not understand why any animal lover would settle for this lack of caring about how a patient is treated. Learn more about AAHA and the standards by going to www.sylvaniavet.com and clicking the link to AAHA on the landing page.

FAMILIES WITH A TOTAL OF 6 OR MORE DOGS OR CATS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BECOME MEMBERS OF OUR NEWLY RENAMED CLUB, PETS A PLENTY.

Substantial discounts on vaccines, medical-surgical services and medications are provided to club members. There is no cost to be a member but you must keep all your pets up to date on wellness exams, appropriate vaccines, heartworm and fecal tests. You may spread the vaccines and testing out over the entire year rather than have to come in all at once. We want our Pets A Plenty members to become raving advocates for SylvaniaVET. To this end, each referral of a new client will be rewarded with double our regular new referral credit of $20. That means your account will be credited $40 for each new client you send us. What a great way to further discount the cost of care for a house with many pets.

MANY ORGANIZATIONS AND CLASSES TAKE FIELD TRIPS IN THE SPRING.

SylvaniaVET welcomes groups of kids or interested adults to take a guided tour of the hospital and learn a little about veterinary medicine and how we provide the best care in the area. Scout groups, nursery to high school classes have toured the hospital. Each tour is geared to the age of the kids so every attendee will have a great experience. Of course the adults coming with the kids learn a great deal as well. Call the office and set up a date for a fun learning experience for your group, 419-885-4421.

PETS TAKING MEDICATIONS FOR CHRONIC, LONG TERM PROBLEMS, NEED TO BE EXAMINED AND TESTED REGULARLY.

As an example many dogs and a very few cats have a urine leaking problem called incontinence. An incontinent dog will leave a urine spot on the floor or carpet where it has been laying or sleeping. We treat this condition with a drug called Proin. Dogs on Proin need to have their kidneys and blood pressure checked every six months. Medications like NSAIDS, Phenobarbital, prednisone and many others can have systemic side effects that we need to check for either every 6 or 12 months depending on the medication. Our new Demand Force communication system tied in with our data base will be sending reminders to you if your pet is in need of chronic medication monitoring.

INTRAORAL DENTAL X-RAYS ARE CRITICAL TO A COMPLETE EVALUATION OF A DOG AND CATS TEETH.

For cats having a dental cleaning, full mouth dental x-rays are a routine part of our procedure protocol. Cats can have serious pathology below the gum line that cannot be seen or detected by a visual evaluation. With dogs we are a bit more selective in taking x-rays as they do not have as much hidden pathology as cats. Whenever we question a dogs tooth, it is x-rayed to help us make a decision on whether the tooth can be saved or must be pulled. We will never pull a tooth that we think can be saved. It is estimated that at best 50% of veterinary practices have dental x-ray capability. At a recent meeting one doctor learned that in the last three years dental x-rays in practices has increased from 25% to 50%. We have had dental x-ray capability for over 12 years. This is one small way that our attention to detail and thorough approach to each case separates us from others.
