OVER 15 STAFF MEMBERS HAVE TAKEN THE TRAINING MODULES CREATED BY THE FEAR-FREE PETS NATIONAL ORGANIZATION AND PASSED TO MAKE US THE ONLY NW OHIO PRACTICE WITH FEAR-FREE CERTIFIED STAFF. All eight of our doctors and staff members from each department are now certified.  As time passes we will offer fear free certification to all our staff members. This push to reduce fear/anxiety/stress in your dogs and cats is designed to make owning a pet more pleasant for both you and of course your pet. We are all very excited to make every one of your pet’s visits to SylvaniaVET a fear-free experience. A few suggestions to get you started on making your pet’s next visit fear-free.

CATS: they must come in a carrier, lined with a soft towel. Carry the carrier like a package, not by the handle, buy a carrier with a top and end that opens and has snap closures so the carrier’s top can be easily removed. Finally, pick up some Feliway wipes or a bottle of the liquid spray to help relax your cat. Do not put more than one cat in a carrier.

DOGS: bring them hungry and bring their food, treats, and a favorite toy for the trip and visit.  Find a classical music station and play it low on the radio. If your dog is easily excited or stressed let us know when you arrive in the parking lot so we can get you to a room or have you wait in the car until a room is ready.

COME PREPARED TO HELP SO YOU AND YOUR PET HAVE A POSITIVE AND FEAR-FREE EXPERIENCE. WE ARE GOING TO TAKE THE PET OUT OF PETRIFIED.

INCURIN BY MERCK IS A PRODUCT THAT WE HAVE BEEN USING TO SUCCESSFULLY TREAT DOGS FOR URINARY INCONTINENCE WITH FEW SIDE EFFECTS. Unfortunately, Incurin is on a long-term/indefinite back order from Merck. We do not know the exact problem with production that is causing the lack of availability. In the interim we will be replacing Incurin with Proin, phenylpropanolamine, or DES, diethylstilbesterol, which will have to be compounded. We are sorry for this inconvenience.

ANOTHER INCONVENIENCE WITH PHARMACEUTICALS IS THE LOCAL AVAILABILITY OF DRY EYE MEDICATIONS --CYCLOSPORIN AND TACROLIMIS.  A local compounding pharmacy that we have used for years to produce both these medications has had to stop their production.  We will be placing initial orders with an out town service, Wedgewood or RoadRunner. Be sure to give us plenty of lead time to get refills for your dog ordered.

NEW BABIES BY THREE STAFF MEMBERS HAVE JOINED OUR FAMILY THIS FALL.

Our head treatment technician, Emily, delivered a healthy baby boy on September 6, 2016 at 2:18am. Ethan Henry came into the world weighing 6lbs., and 5oz.

Julianna, a lead receptionist, delivered a healthy baby girl on October 2, 2016 at 10:02pm.  Margaret Mae came into the world weighing 7lbs., and 13oz.

We expect all three valued staff members to come back after their maternity leave.  We are so proud to have three new members to the extended SylvaniaVET family!

COMPLIMENTS OF DR. MARTY BECKER’S BLOG, WE PASS ALONG USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT WHY USING COMBO FLEA AND TICK PRODUCTS YEAR ROUND IS VERY IMPORTANT.  We recommend Simparica that is quickly effective in killing ticks before they can deposit a serious array of pathogenic organisms in our canine patients. Last year we saw a few patients in February with ticks. Year round Simparica makes great sense.

1. They seek higher ground. Ticks live on the ground but migrate up grass blades or bushes just waiting for a potential host to come by and let these heinous hitchhikers attach and then attack. Ticks in the house can be a serious issue akin to getting bed bugs in your home.

2. Preferred place to snack. Once on the body of humans or pets, ticks like to migrate upward around the head, neck, or ears where the skin is thin. Ticks also like attaching in the groin area of pets. Suck blood, fill up and then drop off to find a quiet place to reproduce. A fully engorged tick and look grey and be as big as a nickel.

3. Tiny ticks can cause big problems. I remember when I was younger, ticks would attach on us (dogs and kids) when we went hiking, but besides being really gross, and we didn’t worry much about disease. That’s no longer the case as scientists are finding an ever growing list of disease causing microbes carried by and passed on by feeding ticks. One tick bite can negatively affect your entire life.

4. Ticks are anesthetists of sorts. A tick’s saliva has anesthetic properties so pets and people don’t really feel the bite (unlike what happens with mosquitoes, gnats, or biting flies). People are often shocked when they come back from a hike and the next day find a huge, engorged tick on themselves or their pets. That’s why it’s important to check both pets and humans very carefully after being in an area that has ticks. I also recommend having someone else check you.

5. EZ does it. Think of a tick as a squeeze bottle filled with disgusting contents. Squeeze it too hard on the bottom and stuff (blood and microbes) squirts out the other end (in this case back into the pet or person the tick is attached to. The best method of removal is to use tiny tweezers and pick the tick off of the surface of the skin like it’s a splinter. Be careful not to touch the tick, so latex gloves or put your hand in a baggie before touching the tick. It is not recommended that  touch a tick with a hot match or alcohol. With siimparica the tick will be dead in four hours which is faster that the time it takes to contaminate the dog. Cats also can get ticks so be sure to use Revolution on all cats.

DID YOU KNOW?

DOGS:

have  about 100 different facial expressions, most of them made with their ears

most domestic dogs can reach speeds up to about 19 miles per hours when running at full speed

CATS:

can jump as high as 7x their height

adult cats can run about 12 miles per hours and sprint up to nearly 30 miles per hour

have better short-term memories than dogs do . Studies have concluded a dog’s short memory lasts no more than 5 minutes, whereas a cat’s can last as long as 16 hours.

MARS, YES THE CANDY COMPANY, IS ALSO INTO VETERINARY MEDICINE BIG TIME.  Recently, Mars purchased Iams pet food company from Ohio based Proctor and Gamble. Mars already owned Royal Canin, the biggest pet food company in Europe. The privately held company also owns Banfield Pet Hospital (a huge corporately owned chain of veterinary hospitals). They now have purchased a large chain of specialty and emergency hospitals, Blue Pearl.  Quite a conglomerate Mars Pet care is accumulating. Royal Canin has a line of veterinary  prescription-like diets that has competed directly with the Iams line of veterinary diets. It was recently announced by Mars that the Iams veterinary line of foods will be discontinued by mid-November. If you are feeding an Iams veterinary diet we will help you transition to a Hills, Nestle’ Purina, or Royal Canin diet. As of now, we expect Iams pet foods to remain a grocery store brand.

NOVERMBER STARTS THE HECTIC HOLDIAY SEASON.  All the holiday food, activity, parties, rearranging the house for Christmas trees/decorations can be stressful for your pets.  We encourage you to be alert to your pets stress so that it can be helped. It is not a sign of weakness and is not a real negative to use one of several mood-affecting medications (both neutraceutical and pharmaceutical). If you are seeing or anticipate a problem get us involved sooner rather than later. You must also be aware of leaving holiday sweets and food sitting around as dogs, and to a somewhat lesser extent, cats will clean the plate if given the opportunity. Be careful of the garbage and tie strings from turkeys/roasts as they can cause a serious obstruction. Many holiday foods are rich which can be harmful to intestinal balance and can cause and episode of pancreatitis.   It might be better to board your pets if you are going to have a holiday party with lots of coming and going as well as singing and revelry.

SYLVANIAVET’S SPONSORING AND STAFFING OF THE HEALTHY PET WELLNESS CLINIC AT PETCO TOLEDO WILL END THE LAST MONDAY IN DECEMBER, 2016. There are many reasons for our folding this service but the main reasons are declining participation and declining profits. The main reason being all our doctors feel that a vaccine clinic is a poor way to provide high-quality pet care. The clinic supports the notion that vaccines are the most important wellness procedure for a dog or cat. We strongly feel that the extensive wellness visit that can only be provided at the hospital is far and away the most critical part of any wellness visit.  The ability to discuss your pet’s health in a private setting is more important than simply giving a few vaccines to your pet.  Petco does not have a scale so that we can record the patient’s weight, which is also a downfall.  The ability of the doctors and assistants to wash hands between patients is not available at a vaccine clinic either. Finally, our new emphasis on lessening the stress experienced by pets when visiting the vet eliminates the very stressful vaccine clinic reality of long, noisy waits leading to fearful visits. NO VACCINE CLINIC CAN TAKE THE PET OUT OF PETRIFIED. Cheap is rarely the best and the vaccine clinic atmosphere and level of service verifies this statement. Clients that have used the Petco clinic will be notified individually this month and next month.

WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR DOG AND CAT PICTURES TO PLACE IN OUR EXAM ROOMS AND HALLS.  Drop off an 8x10 of your pet(s) and we will frame it and hang them on the walls.
